Southern Rail will be attending both the FORESTVILLE Sydney Exhibition and the SANDOWN Melbourne Exhibition on the weekend of 7th & 8th in Sydney and 7th – 9th In Melbourne.
Our wonderful PA Simone will be managing our Forestville Exhibition whilst Rocket will be looking after Sandown. Come along and say hello.

We are excited with the sell through success of the Vlocity sets. The last minute rush took us completely by surprise. We are now delighted to advise of a second run that will take into account the new livery from Public Transport Victoria plus the sold out items which include the Mauve / Green / Yellow 4 light versions in 2 car & 3 car sets along with the Purple / Red / Yellow 2 & 3 car sets.
In addition, we will be producing some limited edition window decoration versions. These will be made available firstly to our existing customers (with a certificate number to match their existing number) who can provide a certificate number. Also to our retail customers who can provide a certificate number & proof of purchase (also with a matching number) and then to the public at large.

We don’t have to wait until the end of the year for this to happen. It is already a fact.
We have read with interest the comments below from some of our competitors and concur wholeheartedly with their comments. We found on our China visit late in 2014 that the tooling cost of new projects has risen 20 – 30%. This increase along with the substantial fall in the A$ to the US$ is adding significantly to the cost of all models. As mentioned earlier, we will no longer see models in the $50 to $60 price range (unless there is significant forward hedging and/or large cuts to margins). The likely pricing will fall in the $80.00 to $120.00 range for some time. This pricing effect will also occur with locomotives. A $295.00 locomotive currently priced at $295.00 is now likely to be priced at $385.00 including many work-in-progress locomotives.
Southern Rail is re-assessing our costing structure and will announce price increases for some models in the near future. These include the 2300/DFZ and “L’ class loco projects.

China Price rises:
The golden days of manufacturing in China may be coming to an end. The China government has mandated that workers will receive a 100% wage rise over five years commencing 1stMay, 2014 and ending 2019.
This will bring the wage of a Chinese production line worker up to US$6.00 per hour. More than a base rate worker at McDonalds gets in the USA. Every little bit of detail applied to that model you just bought is applied by one of those
workers. Imagine what that is going to do to the price of those fully detailed models the market now demands. So where does the budding model railway manufacturer of the future go? India?, Thailand?,
Kenya? Already some US
makers are pulling out and going to Mexico and the Europeans are heading for Bulgaria. Where does that leave Oz?
The other part of this equation is that the cost of new tooling in China is horrendously expensive. To offset this initial cost we need a mark-up on cost better than we can get by just supplying retailers. This is why we direct market. Not all Austrains products, especially new tooling items, are available immediately to the retail network. Rolling stock items are especially expensive to tool compared to the retail return which can be made on them.
We have tried our best to support our customers with low prices but that day is coming to an end. With prices rising in China each year and now the Aussie dollar dropping fast prices are going to have to rise. Every 10c the AUD drops against the USD our costs automatically go up by 10%. So our models should cost 30% more as the dollar is now down to $0.77c. Please take advantage of our pre- paid prices as they won’t be this low ever again.
