In a massive undertaking we are pleased to advise that work is well and truly underway on all our currently advertised versions including the Ampol & Freight Australia Block Fuel Train models along with the Atlantic cars, Victorian Rail Tank Cars & Queensland Rail Tank Cars and some surprises to follow.

Our Ampol models are exquisitely decorated, OFFERING A WIDE VARITY OF VERSIONS & DECORATIONS IN EACH PACK. They are correct for the prototype as is the detail for that model whether it has oblong domes, round domes with top manhole or end manhole.

The freight Australia 2 Dome versions are based on Shell’s 9140 gallon tank car. These have a tank diameter of 6’10” as against a 10,000 gal diameter of 7’1½“ – a prototypical difference of 3.5 ” – about a millimetre in scale terms whilst the 3 dome versions are as the prototype.

Southern Rail’s delivery is expected towards the end of the year but will be confirmed as early as possible.

QLD OLO /OVO RAIL TANK CARS

Contrary to what others would have you believe, we have identified at least 34 Ex NSW NTAF rail tank cars that have made it to Queensland, some via WA. Mobil was the first in 1984. Shell also sent cars to QLD early on but the tanks were removed & placed on flat or container wagons. This was also the case with four BP wagons that were trucked from WA without bogies. Also contrary to what others would have you believe, 9 of these had 6” welded underframes which are not prototypically correct for modelling using the tooling that Southern Rail & SDS Models has available. Consequently there are only 13 prototype wagons that can be modelled. These consist of:

2 x 2 dome round – ex Ampol – Tulloch built

3 x 3 dome round – ex Ampol – Tulloch built

4 x 3 dome offset – ex Ampol – Ex Total – Goodwin built

4 x 3 dome offset – ex Mobil – Tulloch built. These originally operated as OVO 80 – 84

Southern Rails models will faithfully reproduce each of the 4 prototypes – each model will have pad printed numbers & decoration – not decals. When we do a project, we take the time to get it right, not rush the project just to get it to market before the competition. This is very nicely demonstrated by the first class quality and decoration of our first three QLD models, the VAK, VGK & ALY’s.
