TULLOCK RAIL TANK CAR WEATHERING COMPITITION
I have followed with interest some of the comments on various face book pages about Southern Rail’s weathering competition.
With the advent of so many RTR models available these days it is the exception rather than the rule for modelers to scratch build or even assemble kits. I still have ½ dozen Proto 1000 cattle wagons I have had for 14 or so years to put together amongst a lot of other kits. Honestly, it will never happen and I can’t say as I have ever been a scratch builder purely for the lack of time & talent. However I do like to weather and have found with the help of a few mates in the Epping Club that it is quite satisfying and really does take that ’ out of the box’ look away. Depending on how much weathering you want to do it can take between 5 minutes and several hours. Maybe even longer if you want to do a really bang up job
So the whole purpose of the exercise is to encourage modelers to take a little time and have a little bit of fun with your hobby making your nice clean RTR models a little dirty & real.
Not sure what to do? Ask someone that does or join a club & find out or check out some face book pages for ideas. It isn’t hard, look at the prototype. Taking the first step is always the hardest. After that, walking comes easy.
‘But I worked on this model for three hours & now you want me to give it up & it looks so bl…y good just because I am one of the six finalists & I could win between $100.00 & $300.00.’
Gee if you are not a finalist you have lost nothing but gained a nice weathering job on your wagon.
If you are a finalist and don’t win a prize you get your model back – postage paid both ways + a $30.00 gift voucher for your trouble. What have you got to loose.
If you do happen to make the last three, the minimum prize for a winning entry is $100.00 + a replacement wagon + all postage paid. Maybe even $300.00 + replacement wagon. Is that so bad? Perhaps one might even do a better job on the next one now that you have perfected some techniques.
As a footnote, the winning models will be displayed at major exhibitions around the east coast and maybe used for some Southern Rail promotions/advertising suitably accredited. Just maybe an entrant might think that to be cool, a great honour and worthy of praise?
Any way, as I said, give it a go, you have to be in it to win it but don’t forget to have fun.
