Prototype Information

QR National commenced it’s interstate expansion in 2002 with the acquisition of Casino based Northern Rivers Railroad, and the securing of a domestic coal contract in the hunter reqion soon after. This haul involved a shuttle movement from Duralie mine to nearby Strathford mine for washing and blending. This has been a QR traffic since the start of production in March 2003. Initial wagons used were former 1067mm gauge VAKM hoppers from Queensland, converting to standard gauge.A total of 80 were converted between May 2002 and November 2005, as 35 QHAF and 45 QHBF. The difference in the classes was due to the different standard gauge bogies. They were also used on the Newstan to Vales Point domestic traffic which commenced in September 2003.
