Coupler Heights Explained
To help cater for the running of Queensland rolling stock on either standard gauge HO (16.5mm) or narrow gauge HOn3.5 (12mm) at the accepted coupler heights for each gauge, Southern Rail has adopted an innovative yet simple solution.
The coupler box has been fitted with a spacer inserted above the coupler shank for HOn3.5 (12mm) and inserted below the coupler shank for HO (16.5mm). This adjusts the height of the coupler to match those of the more accepted coupler heights for each gauge. For HOn3.5 the coupler shaft is in line with the centre of the buffers, and slightly higher for the HO models.
For modellers that have adopted the HO gauge as their practise, this is in line with the NMRA standard for HO coupler height. This innovation also allows a wagon to be set up as a match truck for the different coupler heights, if so desired.
PROTOTYPE INFORMATION
The ‘ALY’ wagons were built in two batches between 1964 – 1967 and 1970 – 1971. Although around 500 of these wagons were built, this was a period when bogie freight wagons were being introduced and thus, very much shortening their working life. The ‘ALY’ wagon was used all over Queensland in general service. Many of them saw service as support wagons. Due to their short life, size and general good condition when decommissioned, many can be found as storage sheds today.
